EARLY IDENTIFICATION OF NEW CHILDREN

Two new boys from Belhar, a poor community in Cape Town, slept in the city one night recently. The Yizani boys brought them to the Drop In Centre the next day. After interviews with each boy, their schools in Belhar were immediately contacted.

The principals and teachers gave us background on them which helped us to talk them into going back home. A follow-up established that they had successfully returned home. Many Street Children originate from Belhar and flock to all areas of the Western Cape.

The circumstances and situation provided us with an ideal opportunity to network with schools in the Belhar area and educate them about services available for children who run to the streets.
